The Mental Load of Parenting: How New Parents Can Split It Fairly

Bloomli Team · · 7 min read

Short answer: The mental load is the invisible work of noticing, planning, and remembering. To share it fairly, give each parent whole "domains" to own from start to finish, and review the split regularly.

What the research shows

In a study of 1,765 partnered parents, researchers Petts and Carlson found that mothers spent over twice as much time on cognitive labor as fathers (about 5 hours versus 2 hours a week). Mothers also rated the split of this work as more unequal than the split of housework or childcare. Mothers who carried more of the cognitive load reported more stress and depression, while fathers who took on more reported less. The data comes from a specific period and from partnered parents, so patterns can differ in your family, but the signal is consistent: invisible work is easy to overlook and costly to carry alone.

Chores are not the same as ownership

"Tell me what to do" is still handing the planning back. True sharing means one parent owns a domain, including noticing it needs doing, deciding how, and following through.

Try this: domain ownership

  1. List the hidden work. Pediatric appointments, vaccines, daycare forms, diapers and wipes, clothing sizes, birthday gifts, meal planning.
  2. Assign whole domains. For example, one parent owns "health appointments," the other owns "food and supplies."
  3. Agree on a standard. "Done" does not have to mean "done my way."
  4. Hold a weekly 15-minute check-in. Adjust as babies and jobs change.
  5. Protect rest. Each parent gets guilt-free time, scheduled in advance.

When it becomes more than stress
