Screen Time for Toddlers and Preschoolers: Realistic Rules for 2026

Bloomli Team · · 7 min read

Short answer: The American Academy of Pediatrics' long-standing guidance is to avoid screens for children under 18 months (video chatting excepted), choose high-quality content watched together at 18 to 24 months, and keep recreational screen time to about one hour a day for ages 2 to 5. Most families do better focusing on habits, such as when, what and with whom, than on a countdown clock.

Why the conversation is changing

Parents are moving away from rigid daily totals toward routines: tech-free meals, screen-free bedrooms, and set viewing windows rather than a screen that is on by default. Many places have also begun adding rules around phones and screens for children. Check current guidance with your pediatrician and local schools, because the rules differ by region.

A simple family media plan

  1. Pick tech-free zones and times. Meals, the car if practical, and the hour before bed.
  2. Choose content, not just minutes. Slow pacing, clear stories, and no autoplay.
  3. Co-view when you can. Talk about what you see and connect it to real life.
  4. Plan the exit. Give a two-minute warning and a next activity.
  5. Model it. Children copy the phone habits they see.

Handling the meltdown when screens end

Transitions are hard for toddlers. Use a visual timer, give a choice inside the limit ("Which show ends first?"), and stay calm if tears come. Offering something specific to do next works better than a vague "go play."

What to do on hard days

Illness, travel, and burnout happen. A day with extra screens does not harm a child. Aim for the pattern across weeks, and be kind to yourself. If you are feeling worn down, read our guide to parent burnout, and for age-by-age detail see screen time guidelines for children.
